2022 2nd round picks of the amateur draft
To the Astros
Astros trade:
1B Joey Votto
SP Trevor Cahill
To the Cardinals.
At 1B I have Gurriel, Travis Shaw, and Pujols. All are playing better then expected so Votto was expendable and I thought his roster spot could be better used for a different position. ( I called up a back up catcher Voght)
Every starting pitcher in this league has value. Cahill has produced mixed results in two starts this season but has a pretty good track record and you can’t have too many starters in this league. I’m deep at the SP position but it’s hard to give up anything.
I’m the end I decided a second round picks was enough for both players. Neither would be worth a 2nd by themselves but together (considering Cahill is a SP) I felt like the second round pick was fair value. I don’t have a first round picks in 2022 so the extra picks gives me 2 (2nds), 2 (3rds), and 3 (4ths). So at least now I have options to trade back into the first or use the picks on a trade for a player in season.
* also to note the Cubs agreed to pay 1million of Vottos salary for this year and next in his contract. If Votto takes his player option the Cards would be on the hook for the whole amount.
